In 1924 Peter Newhouse purchased the farm which was at the northeast shoreline of Grays Lake. The property extended to the corner of Lake and Center Streets. It has not been determined if Newhouse built the large four square house or if was the former farm house. The house served as the Newhouse home while he developed and operated Grayslake Park, popularly called Pete’s Park. Chicago visitors enjoyed lake activities: fishing, swimming, boating. There were sports fields and playground equipment. The park ownership passed to the Duell family. In the 1950s there was a movement to have the Village purchase the park but the plan failed. A small subdivision was platted and a grocery store was built on the property. Fortunately, the house was not destroyed. It was moved four blocks north and continues to be a residence on Hickory Street.
